Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan led his Heart and Lung Transplant team to yet another milestone – the 401st organ transplant. A celebration held on July 24th at the MGM Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Chennai, India, marked this significant landmark.
For Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan, it has been a long and memorable journey since he performed the first Heart transplant on a 35-year-old man in June 2010. Since then, the team has performed other Heart, Heart and Lung, Bilateral Sequential Lungs, and Single Lung transplants. Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan & team hold the notable achievement of performing the maximum number of Cardio-Thoracic organ transplants in Asia. Additionally, this outstanding team of surgeons has performed several other cardiac surgeries, including LVAD, and RVAD interventions, establishing world-class cardiac care in Chennai.

Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan, Chairman – Cardiac Sciences & Director – Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support at MGM Healthcare Pvt Ltd., and team were recognized for their outstanding service and were awarded the “Best Performing Heart & Lung Transplant Team” in Tamil Nadu for the year 2019 -2020. The Award was presented to Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan and the team by Dr. J Radhakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu on behalf of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN). Appreciating the phenomenal work of the doctors during the Pandemic, Dr. J. Radhakrishnan remarked, ” Patients from other states were airlifted to Chennai for intensive care and transplants.”
Dr. K. R. Balakrishnan’s trailblazing leadership and surgical excellence continue. Most recently, in May 2021, his team performed Southeast Asia’s first Artificial Heart implant on a 3-year-old Russian boy. This was the first such procedure to be done anywhere in Southeast Asia, West Asia, and Africa. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister praised the surgeon and his medical team for taking up such a challenging case and showcasing the state’s capabilities in healthcare to the world.
